4 Years after the battle of Chicago, U.S. Government decided that these Transformers, either Autobots or Decepticon were a threat to humanity and started hunting them down with the help of Lockdown, a mysterious robot hunter from space whose mission was to find Optimus Prime. Cade Yaeger (Mark Wahlberg) is a unsuccessful mechanic who live with her daughter, Tessa Yaeger (Nicola Peltz) in Texas. When he was looking for spare parts in an old theatre with his friend Lucas (Erlicht Bachman.. no, I mean T.J. Miller), he found an old truck which turn out to be a wounded Optimus Prime, a finding which made him hunted also by the CIA agents. Together with Optimus Prime and the other Autobots, he discovered that a company used the remains of Autobots and Decepticon body to develop their own Transformers, without knowing they were reviving Megatron. Will Autobots once again protect earth and humanity? Despite having his friends killed before by humans?
Transformers : Age of Extinction, the fourth installment of Transformers live action movies, come to the cinema with many new things. One which is prominent would be the design of the Transformers, Optimus Prime in this film got a slimmer look, different with the bulky design Optimus had in three previous films. The change of main actor also change the nuance of this film, this time it’s a young father tried to protect his daughter (by diving into alien robot’s war, yeah) not a guy with his sexy girlfriend. Clearly they try to use this formula to create some family drama but still not leaving what they used in previous films, because Tessa is still hot and she also has an arguably handsome boyfriend, Shane Dyson (Jack Reynor) also adventuring to save the earth.
To be honest, I don’t think I like the change they do to Transformers : Age of Extinction, but then again, I don’t even think I like this film. The design of Optimus Prime made the “strong” image of Optimus lost, I think the previous design with a ‘bigger’ look suited him better, especially if you consider him to be a robot transformed from a truck. The family drama they intend to make looked lame, the dialogue sounded corny and anytime that kind of ‘family drama’ moment appear I pray for it to pass as soon as possible so they can fight again. This film took a turn to the worse when even I couldn’t enjoy the battle scene and got sleepy when Bumblebee drove a gun to a throat of Decepticon in slow motion. The flow of this film was a mess, the dialogue was yucky, the acting was not good, and even they made me not able to enjoy robots destroying each other, this is clearly blasphemy.
Okay, to be fair, there’s also goodness in this film. The girls are still sexy, I’d be lying if I said Nicola Peltz was not an eyecandy in this movie. The involvement of human was more significant also, humanity finally see someone taking down Transformers here. The battle was actually still cool, what I talk about with not enjoyable battle was when it’s nearing the end where the long duration and suck storyline bottled up and resulting in giant boredom. Michael Bay and whoever in charge of this tries something a bit different after the formula of Transformers got stale, but that got this movie still stale and even worse than its predecessors. This movie clearly the worst Transformers movie so far, but not bad enough to stop me from watching the next sequel of Transformers. After all, I have a lot of faith in a movie about robots fighting.
